Islanders all across Florida have geared up all year to wuk up them waist for the highly anticipated Miami-Broward Carnival weekend that is now upon us.
Vibrant costumes will mix with sweet Soca music from more than 20 masquerade bands, rum, and the hot South Florida sun for the main event on Sunday where Miami’s Sunlife Stadium will host the fifth annual combined festival celebration.
Sunday’s main event will begin at 10 a.m. and will include Soca and chutney musicians Raymond Ramnarine, Sir Oungku, Ravi B, Shal Marshall and headliner Superblue, an international Soca star and the reigning 2013 Soca Monarch.
It will also feature music from DJ Spice and Team Soca and will feature plenty of Caribbean food, steel pan music and arts and crafts.
Other events for the weekend include the Carnival Kings and Queens Panorama today (Friday) at 5:30 p.m. at the Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 NW 11th Pl., in Lauderhill. Tomorrow morning (Saturday) Broward Regional Park will host J’Ouvert, a daytime body paint party. That will be followed in the night by Soca Xplosion at The Armory, 400 SW 24th St. in Fort Lauderdale.
Tickets for the events can be purchased at the door.
Carnival used to operate as two separate competing carnivals for Miami-Dade and Broward County for six years prior to combining five years ago into one massive celebration.
In the past, the event has attracted more than 50,000 people to the stadium, and is expected to draw a similar crowd this year.
